My Passion is Performing and Teaching
Playing music should be a joyful experience. No matter how many years a person has played, there is always new to discover, or rediscover, every time they pick up their instrument. My goal is to create a culture of positivity and cooperation here at UVU. I want my students to share in that joy of discovery while helping them understand, create and accomplish their goals in a positive, supportive and enriching environment. My method is guided on the principal that we should strive find the inherent music every time we pick up the instrument, regardless of whether it is a long tone, scale, or the horn solo in Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. In that regard, practicing fundamentals are never "just a technical exercise," but instead, musical expression goes hand in hand with the practice of fundamentals; because, at its core, what is technically correct is almost always musically correct. But studying the technical and musical aspects of horn playing is only half the story on becoming a well-rounded musician; we also need to address the mental, physical, and practical challenges as well. That is why I also include mental training for peak performance and practical strategies such as gigging etiquette, interpersonal skills, and work/life/practice balance to bring about positive changes in every student. Ultimately, my goal is to guide students through the process of learning how to become their own best teacher. By problem-solving the obstacles that are holding them back, each student can grow not only as a player, but as a person as well.
